Philip Seymour Hoffman: The Legacy

Philip Seymour Hoffman was an extremely accomplished and talented actor who Hollywood lost too soon. His filmography is impressive to say the least and his personality left a lasting impression on many.

Hollywood was definitely hit hard with the loss of Philip Seymour Hoffman on February 2, 2014. He was an accomplished actor both in film and on stage. His death supposedly resulted from his loss to a tragic drug addiction at the age of 46.

Philip Seymour Hoffman grew up in Rochester, NY and attended New York University where he earned a degree in Fine Arts from the Tisch School of the Arts. He left behind three children and longtime partner, Mimi O’Donnell who is the mother of his children. He also left behind a very distinguished legacy.

His filmography includes cult classics such as Boogie Nights (1997) and The Big Lebowski (1998). He also played some extremely intense roles such as Truman Capote in the bio-pic Capote (2005) and Father Brendan Flynn, a corrupted priest, in Doubt (2008). His ability to take on all types of characters flawlessly was astonishing.

His outstandingly accurate portrayal ofTruman Capote in Capote (2005) won him an Oscar for Best Actor and a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama.

He shared the screen with countless famous actors: Tom Cruise in Magnolia (1999) and Mission Impossible III (2006), Tom Hanks in Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Brad Pitt in Moneyball, and Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013).

Not long after news of his death began to spread, celebrities from all backgrounds began to express their sorrow. Ellen DeGeneres, Justin Timberlake, Elijah Wood, and Ben Stiller were just a few of many to express their heartbreak.

During the days preceding his funeral service, many friends visited his partner of 15 years, Mimi O’Donnell. The list of visitors included people such as: Ethan Hawke, Michelle Williams, Joaquin Phoenix, and more.

Many stars also attended Hoffman’s small private funeral held at St. Ignatius of Loyola on Friday, February 7, 2014 in New York City. The list of mourners present included: Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Chris Rock, Julianne Moore, Diane Sawyer, and Amy Adams.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was a truly talented actor who is sorely missed by all.
