Roll out the red carpet for the 86th Academy Awards ceremony. Wow, what a night of classy captivating fun! Cheers to Ellen DeGeneres who hosted another successful event.

Wow, I can honestly say that was one of the best Academy Awards ceremonies I’ve seen in a long time.  It was tasteful, down to earth, sincere, and FUN.  Ellen DeGeneres owned the night.  She always delivers, not only pizza, but witty one-liners and great sight gags.  She rocked the Good Witch Glenda costume.  From beginning to end, Ellen continued to bring out the best in everyone.  And managed to “break” Twitter with over 2 million re-tweets of a group selfie.  Loved it!!  Her opening monologue set the mood for fun and reminded us that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously, even if you’re a big star.  I’m looking forward to her returning to host next year’s show.

It was magical night. The musical numbers were beautifully done, resonating truth to the phrase “less is more”.  Dialing it back managed to bring out the heartfelt sincerity in each performance.  No over-the-top numbers to overshadow the purpose of honoring hard working individuals involved in crafting imaginative story telling.

The winners were gracious, and their acceptance speeches were meaningful.  Jared Leto, who received the honor of Best Actor in a Supporting Role, attributed his success to his mother.  He reminded us of the struggles others face to reach their dreams, mentioning the citizens of Ukraine and Venezuela.  He also reminded us of the injustice aids patients have suffered especially in the early years of HIV/AIDS diagnosis.  This kind of realness was the common theme throughout the evening.  Lupita Nyong’o accepted the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.  She was poised and gracious.  One of the most endearing parts of her speech referred to every child’s dream being valid, no matter where they’re from.  Encouraging words from such a talented young woman.

One of the most memorable presentations of the night, was the duo of Angelina Jolie and Sir Sidney Poitier.  Sir Poitier won his first Oscar in 1963 for Best Actor in the film Lilies of the Field.  Jolie won her first Oscar in 1999 for Best Supporting Actress in the movie Girl, Interrupted.  They were the essence of classic Hollywood,  Sir Poitier seemly intrinsically and Jolie having evolved to fulfillment.  They awarded the Best Director award to Alfonso Cauron for his work in Gravity.

Rounding out the night, Daniel Day Lewis, last year’s Best Actor winner, presented the award for Best Actress to Cate Blanchett for her role in Blue Jasmine.  She accepted the award with gratefulness and humor.  She gave a shout out for women in films that bring people to the movies and are box office hits.  She stated, “The world is round people.”  Referring to the fact Hollywood needs to change it’s mindset.  Women can star in movies that are successful at the box office.  She also thanked the Sydney Theater Company where she hones her skills.  True Aussie love for her people and country.

The award for Best Actor was presented by Jennifer Lawrence, last year’s female winner for Best Actress.  Matthew McConaughey won the award and honored his family, the people he wants most to make proud.  He eloquently shared, there are 3 things he needs: someone to look up to, something to look forward to, and someone to chase.  God, family, and himself fulfill these roles in his life.  Beautifully put Matthew.  You’ve matured into a man we can all be proud of.
