As Lauren Morelli started writing for the show, she started to identify with the romantic relationships between the women on the show. In her eye-opening article on Mic.com, Lauren wrote “In Piper and Alex, I’d found a mouthpiece for my own desires and a glimmer of what my future could look like.” The whole article is definitely worth a read – Lauren doesn’t shy away from exploring her self-doubt and psyche about realizing later in life that she was a lesbian, especially since she lived and worked in a liberal cities and environments.
The truth is that there is no absolute truth in a coming-out narrative. It’s sad that their marriage is ending (albeit amicably, according to divorce documents), but we’re glad that Lauren was ultimately able to be open with her husband, family, friends and coworkers. It was actually on set of OITNB that Lauren and actress Samira Wiley met. The two are now dating and by their copious pictures on Instagram, the two seem very happy.
