While sifting through vintage National Geographic magazines, Lorde came across a 1976 photo of baseball legend George Brett decked out in his Kansas City Royals uniform and signing autographs for a crowd of fans. That image caught her attention and inspired the song that launched her into stardom. Specifically the word “Royals” struck a chord with the teen and she based her entire creative process around that simple word and her interest in aristocrats of the past.
After trying to meet up with her muse on several occasions, Lorde and George finally connected in Las Vegas where she performed on Tuesday. In March, the Kansas City Royals presented Lorde with an autographed George Brett jersey, which is now a prized possession. Brett even penned a nice message to the young singer, “Lorde, you are Royal to me.”
Pretty neat to see this story come full circle 38 years after the photograph was snapped. It just proves that when inspiration strikes, it strikes hard and can lead to splendid things!
