The New York Times printed an article written by James Franco discussing his thoughts and opinions of the Selfie (a picture taken by oneself of their face as the photo’s main focus) Who cares what it means for journalism when an actor discussing his views on pictures he and others take of themselves becomes news worthy enough to take up space in the New York Times? We just hope celebrities continue to post sexy pictures of themselves.
Franco begins the discussion claiming that he is rather new to the Selfie, which of course who would need to take Selfies if they are continually followed by photographers? He soon dives into the effects that social media have had on both celebrities and everyone else, including major brands. He argues that even though Selfies can be viewed as one being self-absorbed they are also a powerful marketing tool that must be utilized in the twenty-first century.
“I am actually turned off when I look at an account and don’t see any selfies, because I want to know whom I’m dealing with. In our age of social networking, the selfie is the new way to look someone right in the eye and say, “Hello, this is me.” -James Franco, New York Times December 26, 2013.
I know I have been taking Selfies since 2006 and feel they are the best pictures anyone can take, because after all we are all the superstars of our own lives and we should all live that way.
