The Goonies Sequel Coming Soon!

Great Sloth! 'The Goonies' sequel is happening!

The film, a kids’ adventure movie, featured Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen and Martha Plimpton, on a quest to locate a secret pirate treasure. The original film was scripted by the legendary Chris Columbus, whose body of work includes, Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and The Help.

While the original cast has yet to comment on who would be returning for the follow-up, Donner told TMZ “hopefully all of them” would be in the new film.

Although it was previously reported that there would not be a sequel, Astin told IGN in 2012 that he was certain it would happen and that the cast had remained good friends.

“I’m 1,000 percent certain there will be a sequel,” he said. “I will bet my children on it.”

Not convinced that a sequel could ever do justice to the original? Below we highlight three of our favorite sequels to classic movies of all time:

The Godfather Part II, 1974

The Godfather swept the Oscars and redefined the mobster film with its original release, but the follow-up two years later was one of Francis Ford Coppola’s best works. The film focused on Michael Corleone’s rise to power and featured a little-known Robert De Niro.

Toy Story 2 (and 3), 1999

The original became an instant Pixar classic. And how could it not be? With amazing aesthetics and a touching storyline, there was no arguing that this would be a staple in children’s movies for generations to come. And then Pixar did it again (and again) and left us sobbing with the conclusion of this heart-warming tale about childhood and growing up.

The Dark Knight, 2008

Christopher Nolan is a genius and this was clearly evident in Batman Begins. The first film featured a great story line and epic cinematography. Then The Dark Knight came along and blew us all away with Heath Ledger’s legacy as the Joker.

We are big fans of The Goonies and hope the sequel captures that special kid-fueled magic!
