Academy Awards 2014: Red Carpet Style

The best and worst dressed of the 2014 Oscars.

Best Dressed:

Sandra Bullock dazzled in this navy blue, sweetheart cut Alexander McQueen gown. I love the slight shimmer of the fabric; it is enough to add glamour without being over-the-top. She kept the rest of the look low key, which really showed off the elegance of the dress.

Kate Hudson was truly stunning in this Atelier Versace gown that was form fitting throughout, but had a small soft flowing train. The delicate cape and deep v-cut made it a truly stand-out look.

Viola Davis did not make many best dressed lists, but I love this dress. The color is simply gorgeous, but most of all I love the pattern. It is elegant and the varying angles on the bodice make her frame seem thinner. Not wearing jewelry was a smart move: it draws even more attention to the lovely cut of the dress.

I was astonished to see Jada Pinkett Smith in such an elegant gown for the Oscars, as she is known for her more edgy style. I love everything about this dress: the color, the fabric’s light sheen, the flowing layers, and especially the shape of the gown. This is truly a masterpiece by Versace.

Lupita Nyong’o has the perfect body to show off this gorgeous powder blue Prada gown. Her tall slender frame kept the deep cut from looking trashy and her long legs shows off the long, light fabric perfectly.

Worst Dressed:

There are so many elements on Anna Kendrick‘s dress that seals its destiny on the worst dressed list. The black netting with the dark edging just scream tacky. If that isn’t enough, there’s the middle of this dress which has red flowers on top of black netting. Mention the word netting to describe a dress and I am automatically over it.

Anne Hathaway’s dress reminds me of prom during the early 2000’s. The embellishment on the top half is in no way delicate; it is too bold and overwhelming. As for the rest of the dress, it is completely bland.

With this Dior dress, Charlize Theron made it to many best dressed lists which just doesn’t make sense in my opinion. I feel the see through netting over the mermaid frame make it look as though the bottom half was tacked on later. The worst part about the dress: the skin-toned giant straps. They remind me of the clear bra straps that were once the rage. I believe the straps make the dress even more tacky.

Pharrell Williams‘ tuxedo shorts remind me of uniform shorts worn by theme park employees. Apparently he did not get the memo that no one wears shorts to the Oscars. He also went too matchy-matchy with his wife, Helen Laschanh.

With Kristin Chenoweth’s petite frame, she should avoid any sparkly gold shade while attending the Oscars or someone may mistake her for one of the statues. Even if this dress were a different color it still wouldn’t have made the best dressed list. There are just too many details going on here. There’s no focal point, plus Lady Gaga wore an extremely similar dress.
